Georg Druschetzky's life falls into three periods, reflecting his chief places of employment, his positions, and (to a large extent) the places where the sources for his works are found today. Following oboe studies with a member of the famous Besozzi family, probably Alessandro in Dresden, Parma or Turin, Druschetzky became a grenadier in the infantry in 1762, serving as a "regimental musician" from 1768 to 1774, and later as Kapellmeister.
After resigning from the regiment in 1775, Druschetzky’s existence was less secure. He became a "certified regional drummer" in Upper Austria, experience that would result in some remarkable compositions in his later life. He moved to Vienna around 1783, and although successful in seeking membership in the Tonkünstler-Sozietät, few associated opportunities presented themselves to him.
In May of 1795 he joined the household of Archduke Joseph Anton Johann in Pest, Hungary, and remained there for the final 24 years of his life. He was appointed court composer from 1807, and in 1813 was designated music director of the Archduke's eight-piece wind ensemble.
Druschetzky produced a large amount of music, much of which survives in manuscript; very few of the works were printed during his lifetime, and only a tiny portion has been published in modern editions. This represents a field ripe for further research, for Druschetzky's style is hardly formulaic, having a straightforward but spontaneous manner and containing a number of pleasant surprises.
